Action, Spectacle welcomes submissions via Submittable year-round, in English and previously unpublished. Simultaneous and unsolicited submissions are encouraged as long as we are notified immediately if the manuscript is accepted for publication elsewhere.
We employ the broadest possible aesthetic when we read. We encourage submissions of work that is more traditional or explicitly experimental, linear or non-linear, concrete or abstract, narrative or gestural, concerned with the natural world, the self, urban spaces, history, &c.
We will publish 3 issues online each year, one of which will also appear in print. Each issue will feature work chosen by a rotation of several guest editors per issue, including Vu Tran, Dana Levin, Kimiko Hahn, Rick Moody, Rae Armantrout, Tyrone Williams, Emily Fridlund, Saretta Morgan, Kyle McCord, Simone Muench, Cindy Arrieu-King, Amy Lawless, Ryan Ridge, Julia Story and others.
We read general submissions year round. We publish poetry, flash fiction, short fiction, comics, interviews, essays, reviews, as well as some static graphic images. Hybrid and collaborative work, as well as translations are totally welcome and should be accompanied by a copy of the original text, whenever possible.
All text submissions should be sent as ONE Word or PDF document, and all comics and images should be sent as JPEG 300 dpi.
Our response time is 1 to 4 months.
Please submit no more than
15 pages or less of flash fiction
novel excerpts or short stories of up to 7,000 words (you can submit more than one short story)
5 comics (100 cells or less) of comics at a time. We far prefer actual comics to static graphics, though we do publish some of those, as well.
We have no aesthetic, stylistic or theoretical allegiances or mission.
Simultaneous submissions are also absolutely fine as long as we are notified immediately if the manuscript is accepted for publication elsewhere.
Cover letters are not necessary, but be sure to include e-mail contact information.
At present, we cannot offer payment for published work.
